What I stand for
States Rights: First, I need to clarify; states have powers and people have rights but we know what is meant by the phrase States Rights. The very definition of State suggests sovereignty while recent practice suggests a much more subservient roll. The Constitution and the 10th Amendment in particular makes it very clear that all powers belong to the state unless outlined in the Constitution. We need to not only stop further intrusion to powers belonging to the states but roll back many of the intrusions that have already occurred.

Families: Children develop best in an environment with a loving father and mother working together regardless of their marital status.

Education: My mother is a Jr. High teacher, my son is attending Taylorsville High School and I have a dozen nieces and nephews in Utah public schools. I have a strong interest in the quality of their education. Education occurs in the class room with an exchange between teacher and student and is greatly enhanced with parent participation; it does not occur in administrative offices. I believe that we get exactly what we pay for and we are buying too much bureaucracy and not enough education. I will fight to restructure our system for funding education so we can provide more money to teachers and the classroom without further inflating the bureaucracy.

Self defense is a natural right reaffirmed in both our Federal and State Constitutions. It is not a privilege granted by a license from a state or federal agency.

Our economy has taken a beating but is still doing much better than most other states. If we continue our tradition of being an industrious people, we can weather these hard times and recover quickly. Any tax increases will only further deflate our economy and is a proposition I will not tolerate. You do not have the right to just take more from your employer so why would our legislature have the right to take more from their employers? The source of all power comes from the people and no power can be exerted without their consent. All too often, their consent is given through silence. Do not let the power you have as a citizen of a free nation be wasted by silence.

Ethics: I am beholden to only one special interest group, my constituents! During my 25 years of military service it has always been unethical to accept any gift of value. I will not change this personal policy as a state Senator. I am not campaigning for any self interest but to ensure our district has the best representation. I will not accept any special privileges.

Term limits: 8 years – 2 state Senate terms – is a long time and if I cannot accomplish all I can in that time then I am wasting your time and need to be fired. It has also been my observation that, after two terms, most politicians start to become disenfranchised from their constituents and indebted to special interests.

Thank you for your time,
